Movie Review: Tim Burton's Halloween's Greatest
By Alexis Granger

(Note: May contain spoilers.)

What do you think of when you hear Tim Burton? Some may think Sleepy Hollow, to Sweeney Todd, and older movies like, The Nightmare Before Christmas.

This producer, if by opinion, may be one of the greatest, but I'm not here to talk about Tim Burton. No, I'm here to tell you about some of his achievements and a few of the movies that may become one of you favorites this Halloween.

First, we have Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, which is based in the 19th century from the perspective of groom-to-be Victor von Dort. In the beginning, this charming and rather confused character becomes betrothed to Victoria Everglot, because the Evergolots need money and the Von Dorts would like to rise to high society. Though, when rehearsals come, Victor cannot perfect his vows and he ends up running out of the rehearsal and into the woods to practice them. As he gets them right, he finds himself married to Emily; the Corpse Bride. This charming movie about Love and Death (as ironic as it may seem) is one of my favorites. In the movie, life seems gray and dull, but once you come to the death scenes of the movie, it becomes colorful and full of life (in a less literal sense). The critics gave this Pop-Gothic animated tale a B+...*coughs* but who cares what the critics say? Watch the movie and give it your own opinion.

Another movie very well known by Tim Burton would be The Nightmare Before Christmas. Again another one of my favorites, this splendid and on edge movie blends Halloween and Christmas together for an exciting and hilarious outcome. In Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, Jack Skellington, also known as the Pumpkin King, is tired of the same old thing in Halloween Town. He decides to wander off into the woods and find Christmas Town, (if you have yet to realize, this is a musical as well as The Corpse Bride), hypnotized by the colors and enjoyment of Christmas Town, Jack Skellington tries to bring it to Halloween town while trying to find out what makes all the joy in Christmas come to be.

While Jack is out planning his Christmas for the children by Halloween town, the boogey man Oggie Boogie, plots games with Santa Claus's life, after kidnapping him so Jack can send presents to unsuspecting children.

Deseret News gave this movie an A-, once again, watch this tale of dreariness go to pure excitement and see for yourself if this movie is one for you.

Next, we come upon one of Tim Burton's non-animated movies; Edward Scissorhands. Edward Scissorhands is a lonely and unfinished creation by a kindly inventor who died before having a chance to finish Edward's hands, which are left as scissors instead of hands. One day, Peggy Bog decides to make one last stop while selling her Avon products and goes to the historic mansion. She proceeds to meet Edward and because of her warm heart and kindly spirit, she decides to take Edward home with her. At first, he is welcomed into the community and even ended up falling in love with Mrs. Bog's daughter, Kim. Soon after Edward's move, he shows a superior talent for cutting hair and hedges. Though as weeks go by, a robbery occurs which frames Edward as the culprit, from there things begin to spiral down... In my own opinion, this movie is very entertaining and highly amusing. I think anyone that likes Johnny Depp will like this older movie of his.

Last, but not least, we have Beetlejuice. This may seem like just one of Burton's kid movies (if there is such a thing...<__<) but think again... Like the others, this movie is humorous and very enjoyable. The movie starts out with a lovely and normal couple, Adam and Barbara, who live in a beautiful house in New England. One day while driving home, they get caught in a horrible automobile accident, but seem to be just fine and proceed to walk home. Oddly enough, the couple finds out that they actually are dead and have been "haunting" their own house. Adam and Barbara feel threatened by the over-the-top couple who purchased the house, but, yet, they feel very comfortable with the couple's gothically-inclined daughter who discovers and soon befriends them. Adam and Barbara try to scare the family away, but they end up being ignored or laughed at. Soon after the dead couple have sunk low enough to use the "people exorcist", Beetlejuice. Though when Beetlejuice tries to work his magic, the couple gets worried that his tactics are a bit too dangerous and they try to stop him. Did they succeed...? This is a very good movie, not one of my favorites, but it is still good and also very calming when you have just watched something like...say... Jeepers Creepers, or Disturbia.

These are just some of Tim Burton's movies and they may be dreary and morbid, but, then again, isn't that what you think when you see Tim Burton and the amazing Helena Bonham Carter? Well, anyway, just watch these, have a Happy Halloween, and enjoy the movies.
